PBS NORTH CAROLINA RELEASES ‘IMPACT REPORT’ FOR FISCAL YEAR 2024

The publication spotlights the network’s deep commitment to serving all North Carolinians.

 

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC, 3/25/2025 — PBS North Carolina proudly announces the release of its new Impact Report, which showcases its community-focused efforts during fiscal year 2024 (July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024). The publication highlights PBS North Carolina’s positive impact across the state in areas like education, community outreach, emergency management, storytelling and content distribution. 

“As this year’s impact story highlights, our work reflects our ongoing mission to nurture and celebrate the thriving communities that make up our state,” says David Crabtree, PBS North Carolina’s CEO. “In the last fiscal year alone, we hosted a student summit on climate change in the Triangle, filmed a discussion on immigration in the Triad and joined hands with a nonprofit in western North Carolina to provide food, health screenings and a farm-to-table learning experience to families. These special moments are just the tip of the iceberg.” 

The Impact Report notes PBS North Carolina reached 14 million+ viewers in North Carolina and neighboring states. Additionally, North Carolina households accounted for 133 million PBS KIDS streams annually. Other highlights for fiscal year 2024 include: 

  • 260,000+ downloads in the first 12 months of Jamming on the Job, a music-inspired podcast for kids and families. The podcast received an “Excellence in Early Learning Digital Media” honor from the American Library Association.
  • 61,000+ participants from 92 NC counties engaged in 133 educational events, special initiatives, training sessions and conference presentations.
  • 31,000+ hours of PBS favorites like Sesame Street and Masterpiece.
  • 3,176+ hours of locally produced programs, including The NC Listening Project, It’s a Beautiful Day in Pinehurst and State of Change.
  • 40 federal, state and local jurisdictions utilized PBS North Carolina’s tower network infrastructure for emergency communications.
  • Nine Emmy® Awards at the 39th Midsouth Regional Emmy Awards.

 

Education & Outreach 

PBS North Carolina nurtures learners of all ages by providing equitable access to valuable resources and opportunities. In fiscal year 2024, the Rootle Ambassador Program shared PBS KIDS content and local resources with 45,000+ early learners, caregivers, educators and community members. The Rootle Roadster Tour collaborated with 80 community partners to offer free playful learning experiences to families across the state, reaching 15,170+ participants. The Impact Early Childhood Education Summit, an annual conference that offers sessions in areas like literacy, STEM and social-emotional learning, served 255 attendees from three states. Finally, in April 2024, PBS North Carolina hosted 103 students and educators at the Empowered Youth Voices: Climate Change Solutions Summit in Durham. 

 

Community Connections 

PBS North Carolina develops content and experiences that stimulate new ideas and bolster our connections to one another. By nurturing collaboration, compassion and creativity in inventive and accessible ways, PBS North Carolina hopes to ensure a brighter tomorrow for all. 

In fiscal year 2024, PBS North Carolina created community connections with 15 events, screenings and panel discussions featuring 51 subject-matter experts and 16 community organizations. 2,300+ guests attended community events showcasing new PBS programs, including Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s Gospel and Ken Burns’ The American Buffalo

 

Insightful Perspectives & Public Safety 

As a vital network for the entire state, PBS North Carolina connects people to the power of information. It remains committed to sharing knowledge that uplifts communities and keeps them safe as well as broadens perspectives. 

Local productions such as Black Issues Forum, State Lines and ncIMPACT explore what’s happening close to home and share North Carolina insight and innovation with the world. 

PBS North Carolina is also an emergency communications provider for the state through partnerships with the NC Department of Public Safety, Emergency Management and the Office of the Governor. PBS North Carolina provides live broadcasts and streaming in English and Spanish from the NC Emergency Operations Center before, during and after events to keep North Carolinians safe and informed. 

 

Entertainment & Storytelling 

PBS North Carolina delivers storytelling that enriches and educates communities. Throughout the year, PBS North Carolina provided 3,176+ hours of locally produced content such as Premier Stage at UNC School of the Arts as well as 31,000+ hours of PBS favorites like Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. 

 

Financials 

In fiscal year 2024, $29,607,593 in total revenue was received. Private support from individuals, corporations and foundations remains PBS North Carolina’s largest source of revenue. Membership, philanthropic and planned gifts continue to be the vital foundation from which PBS North Carolina creates programs, projects, initiatives and distribution services. Key highlights include: 

  • 95,000+ individuals donated $12.47 million.
  • 45 corporate funders put more than $3 million in revenue under contract, a 20% increase from 2023.
  • PBS North Carolina maintained a balanced blend of funding from private foundations, federal and state government agencies and public media partners. 33 grants under contract totaled $2,244,697.
