Celebrating NC's Historically Black Colleges & Universities

Celebrating HBCUs

The term "HBCU" is defined by Congress as a "historically Black college or university established before 1964, with a primary mission of educating Black Americans." Presently, there are 107 HBCUs acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education, 11 of which are in North Carolina! These institutions remain committed to their original mission and currently enroll over 237,000 students, representing diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, and they have a substantial alumni base of at least one million individuals. HBCUs continue to be essential pillars in America's higher education landscape, offering vital access to education for generations of individuals from diverse backgrounds.

PBS NC is proud to be part of the nationwide expansion of HBCU content, celebrating the invaluable contributions of historically Black colleges and universities. We are committed to sharing the rich history and cultural significance of HBCUs, highlighting their unique role in American education and heritage, as we join forces with Maryland Public Television (MPT), Louisiana Public Broadcasting and Howard University Television for this initiative. Below, delve into a captivating range of PBS NC programs and stories that illuminate HBCUs and the diverse spectrum of experiences they encompass.

North Carolina Central University

Angelique Craig-Moore, IT Director

"I think everyone needs to be able to have that time being together to be complete, not being different but in the majority. Having an HBCU either undergraduate or graduate …having that experience I think is very welcoming and just calming."

North Carolina A&T

Tyran Fennell, Director of HR

"It gave me a great opportunity to see others that look like me. Not only the students but also the people who were the deans of departments. Seeing professors who looked like me or people higher up in administration, having a Black chancellor …all of that is just motivation for me just to see how far Black people have advanced."

North Carolina Central University

Reuben Affiah, Purchasing Director

"My favorite memory is always Chicken Day. It's every Wednesday where everybody's dressed to the tee and that practice still goes on today. And also, homecoming. It's always the biggest family reunion that you'll ever be part of, where everybody comes in and we get to celebrate each other."
