About Health Heroes
Meet the Public Health Heroes
While each pillar of public health is different, they all have one shared mission: keeping you, your families and your communities safe, healthy and informed.
Meet the Host & Contestants
The host and contestants featured on the show will guess which public health pillar each health hero's career falls into.
The Five Public Health Pillars
While each pillar of public health is different, they all have one shared mission: keeping you, your families and your communities safe, healthy and informed. Learn more about each pillar below.
Communicable Disease Control
Epidemiologists and other experts who work in the Communicable Disease Control pillar of public health are our public health detectives. When someone gets sick with an unusual or new illness, epidemiologists track down that illness, discover how it got to us and how to prevent its spread. Epidemiologists and other public health experts work with the whole community, from people to animals to insects, to keep everyone safe.
Environmental Public Health
Environmental Public Health has three branches: food protection and facilities, children’s environmental health and onsite water protection, which helps protect our water supplies and ensures that harmful bacteria and sewage are not present on the ground or in your backyards. An environmental health specialist is someone who protects people by ensuring common places in our environment, such as restaurants, school buildings, day cares and swimming pools, are safe.
Maternal, Child and Family Health
Professionals who work within the Maternal, Child and Family Health pillar of public health help ensure infants, mothers and families have resources they need to be healthy and safe. People who work in this field include nurses who provide information and care to families. Other public health experts in this field help coordinate maternal and infant care in counties where access to doctors is limited.
Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention
Doctors, nurses and other public health experts who work within the Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention pillar of public health have a common goal: keeping you at your healthiest. Some experts help people and communities make healthy choices, like staying active and eating nutritious foods. Some help you care for your asthma, and others are the teachers and coordinators who make sure your family doctor has the best information possible.
Access to and Linkage to Care
A public health professional who works within the Access to and Linkage to Care public health pillar can wear many hats. They could be a grants administrator who seeks funding to create dental health programs in rural communities, or they could be a maternal health expert advocating for proper maternal health care for all in large metropolitan areas. An expert who works within this pillar is someone who has the goal of connecting you to the care you need, no matter who you are or where you live.
