New PBS Dramas This January: All Creatures Great and Small, Miss Scarlet & More

PBS NC invites you to cozy up with an exciting slate of new seasons from your favorite PBS dramas. 

All Creatures Great & Small returns for its sixth season. James is back at training with the Royal Air Force while Helen and everyone back home are all trying to adjust to life with the addition of baby Jimmy. 

In season six of Miss Scarlet, Eliza Scarlet continues breaking barriers as London's first female detective while navigating a new relationship with Inspector Alexander Blake. She's an expert at solving crimes but a complete novice in love. 

Premiering on PBS, Bookish features Gabriel Book, a literary enthusiast and bookseller in post-war London who turns his love of books into a talent for solving tricky murder cases. Also new, Happiness follows Broadway director Charlie Summers as he returns home to help his mother run the local theater alongside an eclectic, passionate cast and crew.

All Creatures Great & Small 

It’s Spring 1941, and with World War II fully underway, we return to Darrowby, where baby Jimmy is keeping everyone at Skeldale House on their toes. Meanwhile, Tristan’s (Callum Woodhouse) surprise return turns out to be more complicated than Siegfried (Samuel West) hoped.

Miss Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips) is doing her best to have it all. Her business is thriving, but her personal life enters new territory as she attempts to follow her heart and develop a relationship with Inspector Alexander Blake (Tom Durant-Pritchard). Eliza may be an expert at solving crimes, but she’s very much a novice when it comes to love. Can Eliza juggle the twin demands of her personal and professional life?

Bookish 

In post-war London, Gabriel Book, a literary enthusiast and bookseller, combines his day job with his favorite hobby — helping solve knotty murder cases. Although happily married to his best friend, Trottie, Book is a gay man at a time when homosexuality was illegal. When a new assistant, Jack, arrives at the bookshop, it soon becomes clear his appointment wasn’t as random as it at first seems.

Broadway director and golden boy Charlie Summers (Harry McNaughton) has come home to New Zealand. And he’s devastated. After 20 years working his way up to the top of the musical theatre world, he has found himself back in his childhood bedroom and back helping his mother, Gaye (Rebecca Gibney), at the local community musical theater. The eclectic cast and crew there may lack professional skills, but certainly don’t lack passion.
