About Homegrown History

Homegrown History is PBS North Carolina’s multiyear public history initiative exploring the state’s rich past and how it shapes who we are today.

The initiative begins by inviting North Carolinians across all 100 counties to share the people, places, and events that make up their local history. Those submissions, along with relationships with historians, cultural institutions, community organizations, and other partners, help inform broadcast and digital content produced by PBS North Carolina.

We then bring that work back into communities through community convenings, screenings, listening events, educational resources, and other opportunities for public conversation.

Following the completion of its first season, Homegrown History is entering its next phase of growth. We are building the systems, relationships, and production practices that will allow the initiative to expand sustainably while remaining deeply connected to the communities we serve across North Carolina.

About the Role

PBS North Carolina is seeking a freelance Coordinating Producer to serve as the operational backbone of Homegrown History. You are equally comfortable managing a complicated production schedule, talking with a community partner about a story that matters deeply to them, preparing an executive update, and jumping into a production problem alongside the Executive Producer.

We are looking for someone who enjoys working with people and details.

The Coordinating Producer has two primary areas of responsibility:

  1. Production Coordination
  2. Community Engagement Coordination

Planning, tracking, reporting, evaluation, information management, and technology fluency run across both.

1. Production Coordination

The Coordinating Producer helps create the structure that allows producers and collaborators to do their best creative work.

You will refine and maintain repeatable production processes, anticipate what needs to happen next, and ensure that details do not get lost as projects move from community story submission through production, delivery, distribution, and community engagement.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Own and maintain production calendars, schedules, trackers, meeting cadences, and other project-management systems across Homegrown History.
  2. Coordinate production timelines and expectations among internal teams, external producers, vendors, and other stakeholders.
  3. Run and support production meetings, including agendas, notes, action items, follow-up, and accountability.
  4. Track and maintain organized, accessible records for contracts, invoices, production paperwork, deliverables, and rights and clearances, along with archival materials such as media, research, scripts, and primary sources.
  5. Document, communicate, and continuously refine workflows, protocols, templates, and deliverable specifications, including deadlines, handoffs, and approvals, so successful practices become repeatable across internal teams and external partners.
  6. Produce executive updates, briefing materials, and wrap reports that synthesize progress across production, community engagement, partnerships, funding, and distribution, making impact, risks, and key learnings clear to leadership.
  7. Use and evaluate project-management, CRM, database, survey, and other digital tools, including emerging technologies, to improve coordination, reporting, collaboration, and institutional knowledge.
  8. Coordinate delivery to programming and national distributors.

Success in this area means the team can trust what comes next—and leadership can readily understand where the initiative stands.

2. Community Engagement Coordination

Homegrown History is a cycle of public engagement. The Coordinating Producer manages the systems and relationships that allow community knowledge to enter our content-development process and helps empower communities to convene when that content returns to them.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Manage the Homegrown History story-submission portal, including associated workflows, external communications, and tracking and reporting, and maintain the systems that keep those submissions organized, searchable, and integrated with our CRM and other organizational tools so producers can readily use them when developing future content.
  2. Nurture a robust network of relationships with participants, advisors, historians, and local and statewide partners through routine, thoughtful communication and coordination, including keeping them informed of release dates and coordinating promotional assets and social-media toolkits.
  3. Coordinate community engagement efforts on two fronts: working with the Executive Producer to plan and produce PBS North Carolina-led events such as listening sessions, and assessing, procuring, and delivering the toolkits and resources local stakeholders need to plan and host their own. Occasional regional travel may be required.
  4. Implement impact evaluation and reporting through surveys and other community and audience feedback, and maintain dashboards that track progress across submissions, partnerships, events, distribution, and geographic reach, including progress toward the initiative's goal of representing all 100 North Carolina counties.

The Coordinating Producer should understand the context of our relationships, communicate with care, and recognize when a conversation requires judgment, sensitivity, or escalation.

Homegrown History operates as a small, nimble production team. While production coordination and community engagement are the core responsibilities of this position, the Coordinating Producer will also work alongside the Executive Producer to solve an unexpected production challenge.
