This Memorial Day, we honor those who gave their all for our country. Tune in to PBS NC for the National Memorial Day Concert, a star-studded event featuring tributes to our fallen heroes and their families as well as musical performances. America’s national night of remembrance, co-hosted by Tony Award-nominated star of stage and screen and proud daughter of a U.S. Marine, Mary McCormack, and Emmy Award-winner Gary Sinise, airs live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, honors the courage and sacrifice of our military men and women, their families, and pays tribute to all who have given their lives in service to our nation. The evening will feature powerful storytelling and musical salutes featuring world-renowned artists with the National Symphony Orchestra, and a special commemoration of the country’s 250th Anniversary, highlighting the all-volunteer force that won our independence in the American Revolution.

Political protest escalates into violence. War gives thirteen colonies a common cause.

Homegrown History is a multiyear public history initiative exploring the state’s rich past. This ambitious project will include community engagement events throughout North Carolina, new broadcast and digital content exploring local history and resources for students and educators.
Legendary entertainer Bob Hope and his troupe of performers traveled over 80,000 miles during WWII to entertain the troops, often performing near the frontlines of Europe and the Pacific in an effort to bring a touch of home to the war. Examine Hope's impact and why President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked some of Hollywood's top radio and movie stars to hold a microphone instead of a gun in the war.

What is it really like to go to war? Filled with terror, pain and grief, it also brings exhilaration, and a profound sense of purpose. Hear the stories of seven North Carolinians who served in the Vietnam War. 1,612 people from the state died in the conflict, including the youngest U.S. serviceman to die in the war and one of the eight women. Thousands of Vietnam veterans with post-trauma stress or other disabilities find relief at “The Wall That Heals,” a traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
